Acupuncture at Our Clinic
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, stainless steel needles into the skin.
Used in China for over 2,000 years, acupuncture is increasingly recognized in western medicine, supported by a growing body of scientific evidence and clinical research.
It can be used alongside physiotherapy to address a wide range of common health problems and reduce pain. For example, in September 2012, NICE acknowledged acupuncture's benefits for migraines and tension-type headaches. It is also helpful when other conventional treatments have not provided relief.

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce natural pain-relieving and mood-enhancing chemicals, including
endorphins,
oxytocin,
serotonin,
and melatonin.
It can:
Reduce pain by blocking pain signals through nerve stimulation
Decrease sensitivity of tender points
Promote relaxation,
Better sleep,
and overall wellbeing

What to expect during your acupuncture session
Eat something within two hours before your session to prevent feeling faint
Your physiotherapist will take a full medical history and ask about your current health concerns
You may be asked to complete an "Acupuncture Treatment Consent Form"
Treatment details:
1–10 needles are typically used in the first session
Needles may be inserted at the pain site, away from it, or both
Needles are usually left in place for a few seconds up to 30 minutes
Needles may be manually stimulated or stimulated with electrical impulses (electro-acupuncture)
After needle removal, you will rest briefly before leaving

How many sessions will need?
Some people need only 1–2 treatments
Others may follow a course of 6–10 sessions
Some may choose occasional treatments as needed
The total number of sessions depends on your condition, response to treatment, and your physiotherapist's assessment. Generally, after around 3 sessions, it becomes clear whether acupuncture is beneficial and if ongoing treatment is recommended.
Acupuncture for Wellness, Pain Relief, and Longevity
Experience the benefits of acupuncture for pain relief, improved mobility, muscle balance, and overall wellness. At our clinic, we specialise in acupuncture treatments tailored for adults of all ages seeking to maintain wellness, manage chronic pain, and support long-term health and longevity.
How soon will I feel better?
Everyone responds differently to acupuncture:
Some experience relief immediately
Others notice gradual improvements over a few sessions
Occasionally, symptoms may temporarily flare for up to 24 hours before improving
Acupuncture is a natural, holistic approach that complements physiotherapy, enhances muscle balance, and supports long-term wellness and vitality.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture uses ultra-fine, sterile needles, about the width of a human hair. During treatment, you may feel:
A brief pricking sensation on insertion
Warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a mild ache
Deep relaxation or light-headedness
These sensations are normal and indicate your body is responding positively.

Acupuncture is safe when delivered by an AACP-registered Chartered Physiotherapist. Our therapists:

What does the evidence say?
Clinical research supports acupuncture for pain management, muscle balance, and overall wellbeing:
Knee osteoarthritis: Acupuncture reduces short-term pain more effectively than standard care
Chronic neck pain: Adding acupuncture improves pain and function
Safety: Large studies confirm acupuncture is very safe when delivered by trained professionals
She pinpointed the exact area where the pain was coming from and worked on that area through massage and acupuncture. She also gave me exercises to do at home. After a few sessions with her I was pain free.

Various problems going back more than 10 years of limp and leg pain. I was convinced it was an unhealed fracture in the foot. It turns out it can all be corrected with massage , specific exercises and acupuncture. Now my limp and numbness in the foot is mostly gone, the swelling in the foot has almost dissolved and am on course to be pain free. Thank you Katie
